A local residents’ group in Southall’s Norwood Green is going ahead with an election hustings tonight (5 May 2026) — despite several political parties declining to attend.
The event, organised by the Norwood Green Residents Association, will be held at St Mary’s Church on Tentelow Lane (UB2 4LE) from 6pm to 8pm.
It is aimed at giving residents a chance to meet candidates and raise issues ahead of the 2026 Ealing Council elections which take place on 7 May 2026.
But organisers say Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party have all declined invitations to take part.
Steve Searle, chairman of the Norwood Green Residents Association, said: “We have had quite a poor response. Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrats and the Green Party have declined to attend however the Ealing Community Independents and independent John Martin are attending and we have had interest from our residents so should be interesting.”
Mr Searle added: “I will be chairing the meeting and all Norwood Green residents are welcome.”
Norwood Green ward elects three councillors to Ealing Council. The current councillors, all elected in 2022, are Councillor John Martin, independent, and Councillors Ghulam Murtaza and Tarept Sidhu, both Labour. Councillor Martin was elected as a Labour councillor but is now standing as an independent after not being selected by Ealing Labour to run again.
