Mother and son confirmed in Hanwell park water tragedy

A 34-year-old woman and a seven-year-old boy who died after getting into difficulty in the water at Elthorne Park in Hanwell have been confirmed by police as a mother and son, with officers treating the deaths as a tragic accident.

Emergency services were called to the park shortly before 4.30pm on Saturday (25 April 2026) after reports of two people in distress in the water. The pair were recovered but were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Metropolitan Police said officers attended alongside crews from the London Fire Brigade and paramedics from the London Ambulance Service.

In an update, police said further enquiries had established the incident was a tragic accident and that the deaths were being treated as non-suspicious.

Formal identification has taken place, but officers said they were not naming the pair at this stage while those affected by their deaths were informed.

Detective Superintendent Pete Thackray, from the Met’s West Area Command Unit, said: “This is a tragic incident in which a woman and her young child have lost their lives. Our thoughts are with their loved ones.”

He added that first responders and members of the public had done their best in “an incredibly challenging situation”.
