On 7 May 2026, residents in the Southfield ward will vote to choose who represents them at Ealing Council.
EALING.NEWS has asked all candidates standing to become a councillor, 7 questions about who they are, what they hope to deliver and why they want residents to vote for them.
Here’s what Gary Malcolm, standing for Ealing Liberal Democrats in Southfield, has to say:
Tell us a bit about yourself, your priorities for the ward and why you want to be councillor for Southfield?
I have been a Councillor for 24 years and lived in homes in Perivale, Acton and Chiswick since moving to London. I am the Liberal Democrat Group Leader so manage the increasing number of Liberal Demorat Councillors. I want to be a Councillor as residents often feel kept in the dark by Ealing Council and so I can help them get answers or to get their issues resolved. My priorities for Southfield ward are to get the streets cleaner, less flytips and litter, and also helping to make improvements to our parks as well as working with the police to help reduce crime.
What motivates you?
Making residents happy when you solve problems for them.
What is your own personal connection to either Southfield or any other part of the borough?
I live in Southfield ward and have been a Councillor in Southfield for 24 years.
What do you consider to be your 3 top political, work or personal achievements and what impact have they had?
1. Getting the Council to finally move out residents in danger from Meath Court and Marston Court to safe housing.
2. Ensuring the Council did what it promised when it was backtracking to name Warren Farm a Nature Reserve a month ago.
3. A personal achievement was climbing a 6,000 metre mountain in the Indian Himilayas last year.
What do you consider to be the top 3 challenges Southfield faces and how will you as a councillor address them?
The top challenges are that the Liberal Democrats do not run the Council but we have a good record of getting the Council to make changes to their plans and the Lib Dem have many achievements over the past 4 years as the Council’s Official Opposition. We want to see the Council being more proactive and listening to residents and properly consulting residents. We want to see a cleaner and safer Southfield and I will help this by liaising with the local police team and contacting the Council to get dirty streets cleaned up.
What do you love about Southfield and the borough of Ealing?
I love the parks in Southfield as we have a number of them and they are a great place to walk around in Summer to clear your head and meet friends.
How accessible will you be to Southfield residents and how can they get in contact with you now and if elected how will you ensure you are accessible to them in the future?
Liberal Democrats hold regularly monthly surgeries but also we are on contact via our website, email and by phone. We also attend lots of local ward events such as the police panels and this means we are very accessible.
