Professor Bernadine Idowu from Ealing’s University of West London (UWL) has been elected to the Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences, joining 53 other biomedical and health scientists recognised this year. She will be formally admitted at a ceremony next month (9 July 2025).
The Academy said the Fellows were chosen for “remarkable contributions to advancing medical science, groundbreaking research discoveries and translating developments into benefits for patients and the wider public.”
Ms Idowu is Professor of Biomedical Sciences at UWL’s School of Medicine and Biosciences and co-chairs the Medical Research Council’s (MRC) Black in Biomedical Science Research Advisory Group. In 2023 the MRC committed £3.7 million to outreach for Black secondary school and university students, summer internships, networking and support to help early-career researchers become an academic or a principal investigator.
Reacting to her election, Professor Idowu said: “I am deeply honoured to be elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. I am grateful for the recognition of my leadership in diversifying the Biomedical Science curriculum at UWL alongside leading various initiatives including my annual national Black in Biomedical Science undergraduate conference, which has been supported by the Academy of Medical Science since launching at UWL in 2023. I look forward to supporting the Academy’s work in promoting excellence in diversifying medical science.”
