Andy Slaughter MP praises ‘inspiring’ Nicole Farhi exhibition at Pitzhanger

Andy Slaughter, MP for Hammersmith and Chiswick and chair of the Justice Select Committee, visited Ealing’s Pitzhanger Manor on Friday (6 June 2025) to view J’Accuse…!, Nicole Farhi’s exhibition on victims of miscarriages of justice.

Mr Slaughter described the exhibition, which is due to finish on 15 June 2025, as “inspiring” and praised its powerful depiction of injustice through sculpture.

The exhibition features 25 works from Ms Farhi, each portraying a wrongfully convicted individual from around the world.

At its centre is a sculpture of Andrew Malkinson, who spent over 17 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. His case recently came under scrutiny by Mr Slaughter’s committee, which was critical of the Criminal Cases Review Commission’s (CCRC) handling of the matter. The fallout led to the resignation of the Commission’s chair, with Dame Vera Baird DBE KC – whom Slaughter described as “highly competent” – taking over on 9 June 2025.

Mr Slaughter said: “The CCRC is a unique body. We were the first country in the world to set up an independent body that championed the rights of people who had been wrongly convicted.”

He added: “What fascinated me, of the 25 sculptures which Nicole has done, only a few are from the British criminal justice system, the rest are from all over the world. Every country thinks it’s justice system is unique and every customer thinks that that their justice system is the best. But the same mistakes and misconduct is happening, in many, many different types of society and many, many different types of justice system.”

An evening discussion between Ms Farhi, lawyer Anthony Julius and Native American activist Yvonne Swan – whose story is included in the show – will take place on 12 June at Pitzhanger Manor.
