Students from West London College’s Ealing Green College campus were given a unique insight into the world of professional music when members of Usher’s touring horn section, Good Times Horns, paid a visit to West London.
Mike Burton, Melvin Jones and Wilbert Williams – all seasoned musicians with extensive touring experience – took time out of their busy schedule to speak with more than 100 learners enrolled on Foundation Learning courses at Ealing Green College. They were also joined by students from The Rhythm Studio, based at Hammersmith & Fulham College.
The dynamic trio shared insights into life on the road, the realities of the music business and the discipline required to sustain a career in the industry
Their visit coincided with Usher’s ‘Past Present Future’ tour which sees them playing to over 200,000 people in a 10-show residency at the O2 Arena in Greenwich.
The trio delighted the students with a performance of Earth, Wind & Fire’s classic “Getaway”.
Melvin Jones from Good Times Horns said: “I’m inspired by what I saw today. Keep up the great work.”
Oladisun Majekodunmi, programme lead and foundation learning lecturer, said: “We were thrilled to have these accomplished musicians share their experiences with our students. Their advice on resilience, career choices, and developing the necessary skills for the music industry is invaluable.”
Marina Clark, head of foundation learning and business, added: “Good Time Horns were not only exceptional musicians but also charismatic, approachable, and entertaining guests, creating an atmosphere of energy and inspiration. It was a fantastic way to conclude the term, leaving our learners uplifted and motivated for the journey ahead.”
Wilbert Williams said: “Went to West London College and had an outstanding musical time with exhilarating students eager to learn about the ins and outs of being a professional touring musician. They are so talented and eager to learn, with an overflow of talent. The arts are alive and well here in London, and the diversity and level of musicianship were off the charts. It was both rewarding and reassuring to see how bright the future of music is.”
Mike Burton added: “The students and faculty at West London College and The Rhythm Studio truly blessed me today. It was a breath of fresh air to see young faces so enthused and excited about music – real music. Thanks to Mr Oladisun Majekodunmi for making this all happen. The future of music in London is in good hands.”
