A new art exhibition featuring the work of fashion designer and artist Nicole Farhi has gone on display at Ealing’s Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery.
J’Accuse…!, which runs until 15 June 2025, features 25 sculptures by Ms Farhi and explores victims of miscarriages of justice over recent years and from history.
The exhibition saw its opening last week (18 March 2025) attended by stars of stage and screen including Bill Nighy and Simon Callow along with leading people from the literary and art world and local dignitaries including Mayor of Ealing, Councillor Yvonne Johnson.
The exhibition takes its name Emile Zola’s 1898 open letter drawing attention to the case of wrongfully imprisoned Captain Alfred Dreyfus, J’Accuse…!
Among the 25 busts of individuals who were wrongfully convicted across the world include Timothy Evans who in 1950 having been wrongfully accused of murdering his wife Beryl and infant daughter was executed by hanging.
Clare Gough, director of Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery, said: “The focus of Nicole’s work is the person behind the headlines and the legal arguments. The person who has endured years, in many cases decades, of the loss of their liberty, and of course, in so many cases, the loss of their life as well. Her work helps us to look at and remember these people and what they have been through.”
Nicole Farhi commented at the opening: “‘J’Accuse…!’ is an exhibition about the weight of accusation and the fragility of justice. The 25 faces I sculpted are, for me, symbols of injustice. These people are victims of flawed systems, false assumptions, and public hysteria… Looking at those faces, we acknowledge not only their suffering but our responsibility to remember.”
Pitzhsanger Manor & Gallery is located at: Ealing Green, London, W5 5EQ
