Ealing Central and Acton MP Dr Rupa Huq wins Backbencher of the Year award

Dr Rupa Huq, MP for Ealing Central and Acton, has scooped Backbencher of the Year at the inaugural People’s Awards in recognition for her work in Parliament and on behalf of local constituents.

The awards, which aim to honour those in the political and public sector for their work, were held at the House of Commons earlier this month (6 March 2025).

The Labour MP, who sits on the Culture, Media, and Sport Select Committee, was recognised for work which included her Sale of Tickets (Sporting and Cultural Events) Private Member’s Bill to make ticket sellers more transparent and an end to dynamic pricing following last year’s method of Ticketmaster selling Oasis reunion tickets to fans.

As well as her involvement on the Culture, Media, and Sport Select Committee, Dr Huq has also been lobbying Government to improve the Elizabeth Line service which goes through her constituency and stops at Acton Main Line and Ealing Broadway.

Since becoming MP for Ealing Central and Acton in 2015, Dr Huq has been active on a number of All Party Parliamentary Groups. She currently chairs the groups for Ethnic Minority Business Owners, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Single Parent Families.

Dr Huq said: “It was an honour to receive such a prestigious award and to see so many fantastic people being recognised for their hard work across so many different sectors.”

Others who won awards at the event include fellow Labour MP Seema Malhotra and Conservative MP Kit Malthouse for their contributions across the House.

L. George, director of Luminary Networks, organisers of The Peoples’ Awards said: “In the UK, we are privileged to have a rich tradition of civic participation. Women and men alike play an integral role in political and public life, whether as elected representatives, dedicated voters, or passionate advocates within community and voluntary organisations. Their efforts strengthen our democracy and uphold the very fabric of our society.”
