The founder of a Southall sports charity that has helped thousands of young people over almost four decades received Ealing’s highest sporting honour last week (7 July).
Mesba Ahmed MBE, founder of London Tigers, was presented with the Outstanding Contribution to Sport Award at this year’s Ealing Sports Awards, organised by Ealing Council with support from leisure operator Everyone Active and held at Ada Lovelace C of E High School.
The award recognises Mr Ahmed’s long-standing commitment to using sport to create opportunities for young people. He founded Marylebone FC in 1986, which later became London Tigers, an inclusive multi-sport organisation offering football and cricket across Southall and Ealing.
Today, London Tigers runs 18 junior and adult teams and is accredited by both the Football Association and the England and Wales Cricket Board.
The annual Ealing Sports Awards celebrate athletes, coaches, volunteers and clubs from across the borough. Other winners included Dave Johnson of Ealing Southall & Middlesex AC, who was named Coach of the Year, Megan Jones MBE, who won Adult Sports Person of the Year, and Ealing Swimming Club, which was named Sports Club of the Year.
Joint winners included Brentham Bowls Club and Olivia Armour in the Inclusive and Active Award, while London Fruit Bats and West London Gymnastics shared the Junior Club of the Year title.
Councillor Lauren Wall, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for thriving communities, said: “Congratulations to all the winners, finalists and nominees whose commitment continues to inspire people of all ages to get involved in sport and physical activity across the borough.”
