Trailfinders Women have secured a major coup with the signing of New Zealand international Alana Borland (née Bremner) ahead of the 2025/26 Premiership Women’s Rugby (PWR) season.
Hailing from Christchurch, Borland’s rugby journey began at Lincoln University, where she became the first woman to make 50 appearances for the side. She went on to shine in Super Rugby Aupiki with Matatū, playing a key role in their historic title win over Chiefs Manawa.
Domestically, Borland captained Canterbury to an impressive fourth consecutive Farah Palmer Cup title in 2020, earning Player of the Season honours. Her consistent excellence also led to 28 international caps with the Black Ferns. She made her debut in their 100th Test match against England in 2021, marking the occasion with a try. Later that year, she helped New Zealand win the Rugby World Cup, scoring in the quarterfinal against Wales.
Known for her ferocious tackling, smart lineout work and natural leadership, Borland is set to bolster the Trailfinders’ forward pack.
Borland said: “I’m very excited to be joining Trailfinders for the upcoming season. I’m looking forward to challenging myself in a new environment and seeing what value I can add to this team. After talking to Barney and a current player, the club sounds like it has a great culture and a well-resourced, well supported team.”
Head Coach Barney Maddison added: “Alana is a world-class player, and we are incredibly excited to have her on board. Her experience at the highest level, both domestically and internationally, will be invaluable to our squad.”
