Why I’m standing: Raj Gill, Ealing Community Independents, Dormers Wells

On 7 May 2026, residents in the Dormers Wells ward will vote to choose who represents them at Ealing Council.

EALING.NEWS has asked all candidates standing to become a councillor, 7 questions about who they are, what they hope to deliver and why they want residents to vote for them.

Here’s what Raj Gill, standing for Ealing Community Independents in Dormers Wells, has to say:

Tell us a bit about yourself, your priorities for the ward and why you want to be councillor for Dormers Wells
I am a retired pensioner with a lifetime of experience standing up for working people as a trade union official across manufacturing, service, security and food industries. I have spent decades resolving issues, defending rights, and delivering real results for ordinary people. Now, I have the time, energy and commitment to fully dedicate myself to serving the residents of Dormers Wells.

My priorities are clear and rooted in what residents tell me matters most: safer streets, stronger communities, cleaner neighbourhoods and better local services. I want to tackle anti-social behaviour, improve public safety and take firm action on litter and fly-tipping so that people can feel proud of where they live.

I am also deeply concerned about traffic and congestion. We need practical solutions that make our roads safer and more efficient, including sensible speed limits of 30 miles per hour on main roads and 20 mph on high streets and residential areas.

At the same time, I strongly oppose high rise tower blocks that take away from the character and beauty of our area and risk turning our communities into concrete jungles. Development must work for residents, not against them.

I want to be a councillor because I care deeply about Dormers Wells. This is about improving quality of life, protecting what makes our area special, and building a stronger, safer future for everyone.

What motivates you?
I am motivated by making a real and lasting difference to people’s lives. I have seen first-hand how decisions made at council level impact families, and I believe those decisions must always put residents first.

My drive comes from listening to people, understanding their concerns, and delivering practical solutions that improve everyday life. I want to raise standards, strengthen our community, and ensure every voice is heard and respected.

What is your personal connection to Dormers Wells or the borough?
I have lived in this borough for over 40 years, and my family has been part of the Southall community since the 1960s. This is not just where I live, it is my home.

I regularly attend the Singh Sabha Gurdwara and have been actively involved in community life for decades. I have also supported important local campaigns, including protecting Southall Town Hall and defending vital services at Ealing Hospital.

What are your top 3 achievements and their impact?
First, I played a role in campaigning to protect essential services at Ealing Hospital, including A&E and maternity care, helping ensure that local families continue to have access to critical healthcare.

Second, I supported efforts to save Southall Town Hall, preserving an important part of our local heritage and identity for future generations.

Third, I have raised funds for charities both locally and internationally, including supporting vulnerable residents in Southall during the Covid pandemic, when help was needed most.

What are the top 3 challenges facing Dormers Wells and how will you address them?
The first challenge is crime and anti-social behaviour. I will push for stronger neighbourhood policing and more visible patrols so residents feel safe in their own streets.

The second is the lack of opportunities and facilities for young people. I will support investment in youth services, sports and community spaces that give people positive opportunities and bring communities together.

The third is environmental neglect, including litter and fly-tipping. I will fight for cleaner streets, tougher enforcement and better maintenance so our area reflects the pride people have in it.

Alongside this, I will prioritise tackling congestion and improving road safety through practical, resident focused traffic measures.

What do you love about Dormers Wells and Ealing?
What I love most is the strong sense of community, the diversity and the warmth of the people. It is a place where different cultures come together and where people look out for one another.

Ealing offers so much: great transport links, green spaces, local shops and a real sense of belonging. It is vital that as we grow, we protect this character and avoid overdevelopment that damages the identity of our communities.

How accessible will you be to residents?
Being a councillor is about being present, accountable and approachable.

I will be easy to contact by phone, email and in person. If elected, I will hold regular surgeries, attend community meetings, and keep residents informed through updates and newsletters.

Most importantly, I will listen, respond and take action. With the time I now have in retirement, I am fully committed to being there for residents when they need support.
