Ealing is among 10 boroughs in the capital set to trial a new generation of speed cameras, as Transport for London (TfL) and the Metropolitan Police step up efforts to tackle dangerous driving.
The radar-based technology will be installed at a selected site in Ealing over the coming weeks as part of a wider rollout across London. Other boroughs taking part in the trial include neighbouring Hammersmith & Fulham and Brent, as well as Haringey, Tower Hamlets, Havering, Croydon, Hackney and Sutton. All locations have been chosen based on risk and suitability, and are on 20mph and 30mph roads.
The move follows ongoing concerns about speeding, which was recorded as a contributory factor in around half of fatal collisions in London in 2024. The new cameras combine 4D radar with high-resolution imaging, allowing them to monitor multiple lanes of traffic without the need for road sensors or visible flashes.
The system is intended to improve enforcement by capturing clearer images and covering a wider area than existing spot-speed cameras.
Siwan Hayward, TfL’s director of security, policing and enforcement, said: “Speeding continues to be a major cause of the most devastating collisions on our roads. This trial will allow us to test new radar-based camera technology and ensure it meets the needs of a modern enforcement network.”
