Following the success of Volunteers’ Week, held earlier this month (2 to 8 June 2025), TV presenter James May is calling on Londoners to help tackle food poverty and waste by driving for Park Royal-based The Felix Project.
Mr May, known for his presenting work on Top Gear, Great Explorers and The Grand Tour, began volunteering as a delivery driver at the charity’s Park Royal depot during the pandemic and continues to fit in shifts between filming.
He said: “Food waste has bothered me ever since I was a kid, and there’s a lot of it about. Tons and tons of it. And there are people who desperately need it. So it can either be redistributed or thrown in the bin, which is a bit of a no-brainer.”

Mr May added: “I really enjoy my shifts at Felix – there’s great morale at the depot and it’s the best exercise I do. If you enjoy driving, well, why not come and drive a big van for free? You will see London and help people.”
The Felix Project, London’s largest food redistribution charity, works with more than 1,000 community organisations to deliver surplus food across the capital. It is now appealing for more drivers, walkers, kitchen helpers and packers.
Between January and March 2025 alone, 321 active volunteers in West London gave up a total of 9,467 hours – regularly supporting depot operations or making deliveries across the city.
A Felix Project spokesperson told EALING.NEWS: “We urgently need people in West London. Without volunteers The Felix Project would not be able to rescue the volume of food and get it to people in need. The great thing about Felix is that there’s no minimum time you need to give – you can come in four days a week or four days a year – we’d love to have you.
“We especially need drivers and co-drivers. Drivers collect food that would otherwise go to waste and deliver it to charities and schools across London. Co-drivers ride alongside to help with deliveries and keep drivers company. We also need depot volunteers to sort and pick food ready for distribution.”
Debbie Coulson, head of volunteering, added: “Volunteering for Felix comes in many shapes and sizes. If you prefer walking to driving, you could join our Green Scheme and deliver food on foot, or perhaps you’d like to build up your culinary skills in our kitchen. We are calling on everyone to come and be part of this amazing organisation, where we believe that no good food should be wasted and no one goes hungry.”
