Ealing initiative tackling digital divide

An access to technology initiative between Digital Poverty Alliance (DPA) in partnership with Ealing Council is helping bridge the digital divide by redistributing laptops and tablets to schoolchildren and vulnerable residents who lack access to tech.

The scheme collects donated devices from the public which are then assessed, refurbished and given out to pupils in local schools and individuals including senior citizens and refugees.

Councillor Steve Donnelly, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for inclusive economy, described digital access as “essential” in today’s world. He said: “Providing children with the necessary tools to complete their homework and engage with online learning means we are bridging the digital divide and empowering students to reach their full potential.”

Councillor Donnelly added: “We want to ensure that everyone has access to the technologies required to create a more equitable environment where everyone has the opportunity to learn, connect and thrive.”

Currently around 19% of Ealing residents do not have a digital device at home which hampers their ability to access education, manage bill, apply for jobs, or attend medical appointments.

Elizabeth Anderson, chief executive of the Digital Poverty Alliance, said: “This initiative has been a great way for Ealing residents to take real action to support their community. With over 1.6 million people in the UK—and over 270,000 in London alone—lacking access to a digital device, many are being left behind.”

Ms Anderson added: “By donating, refurbishing, and redistributing devices, we can bring people back online and ensure unused tech isn’t left forgotten in drawers, but in homes where it makes a difference.”
