Ealing Council is urging residents to help identify fly-tippers as part of its “This is our home, not a tip” campaign, by publicly naming and shaming suspected offenders caught on CCTV.
In a move aimed at deterring illegal dumping, the council has launched a new webpage featuring videos of individuals caught fly-tipping, and is appealing to the public to help identify them. The footage includes incidents in Acton, Southall and Greenford.
With more than 700 surveillance cameras installed across the borough, the council is now calling on the public to assist in tracking down those responsible.
Footage which shows evidence of fly-tipping will be uploaded to the council’s website and social media accounts. Residents and local businesses in hard-hit areas will also receive images of suspects through the mail.
Council leader Peter Mason said: “Fly-tipping is not just unsightly – it’s illegal, anti-social and a blight on our communities. We’re proud of our borough and we won’t tolerate people treating it like a dumping ground. This new measure sends a clear message: if you fly-tip in our borough, you will be seen, and you will be held accountable.”
Since the campaign began in May, Ealing Council has said hundreds of fines – of up to £1,000 – have been issued. The latest phase aims not only to deter offenders but also to involve the community in identifying them. Alongside CCTV footage, enforcement officers rely on witness videos and evidence found within the waste itself.
Councillor Paul Driscoll, cabinet member for climate action, urged collective responsibility: “This is our home. We all have a role to play in keeping it clean. If you see someone fly-tipping, report it. If you’re disposing of waste, do it responsibly.”
To support its efforts, the council’s in-house contractor Greener Ealing Ltd clears 98% of reported fly-tips within two working days.
Privacy laws are also being respected: once individuals are identified, footage is either taken down or blurred, in compliance with the Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR.
