E-bike battery fire damages Gurnell Grove maisonette

A man was taken to hospital after a fire broke out over the Bank Holiday weekend at a block of flats in Gurnell Grove which firefighters believe was caused by a converted e-bike battery.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Ealing, Wembley and Southall fire stations were called to Gurnell Grove shortly after 7am on Saturday (23  May 2026).

Half of the first floor of a split-level maisonette was damaged in the blaze.

One man escaped through a first-floor window before firefighters arrived. He was treated at the scene by paramedics and later taken to hospital. A woman also managed to leave the property safely before crews reached the scene.

The fire was brought under control by 9am after Control Officers handled eight emergency calls.

London Fire Brigade said the fire is believed to have started accidentally after lithium batteries fitted to a converted e-bike failed.

A spokesperson for the Brigade said: “It is vital that any conversion is carried out by a professional or competent person.

“We encourage anyone who owns an e-bike or e-scooter to look at our #ChargeSafe advice to help keep themselves and those around them safe from these types of fires.”
