Work has started on a new housing development for Twyford Abbey that will see 296 homes built on the site with 50% of them being offered as affordable housing, developers Latimer has revealed.
A groundbreaking ceremony took place on 28 February 2024 to recognise the start of the housing project.
Latimer, part of housing association Clarion Housing Group had initially planned for 36% affordable housing but has now increased this from its original plans.
The new homes are set to be ready in 2026 and come after locals campaigned to stop the development but Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan did not intervene in the planning permission granted by Ealing Council in 2022.
Richard Cook, group development director, Clarion Housing Group said: “We are excited to be revitalising this historical landmark and to be providing much need affordable homes for Ealing.”
Councillor Peter Mason, leader of Ealing Council commented: “We’re delighted to see work get under way at this iconic site. 50% of the 296 new homes being built there will be available as affordable tenures, including 70 which will be let at rents that local people on moderate incomes can comfortably afford. The site will also include a new park for the whole community to enjoy, which we wrote into the planning conditions for the development.”
He added: “We will continue working with our partners all over the borough to deliver the new affordable housing our seven towns so desperately need and delivering on our ambitious goal of creating 10 new parks and open spaces.”
An additional 30 homes will further be built on the Grade II listed Twyford Abbey building which will be sold for private use. Clarion says this will be delivered by a separate development partner.
