London Assembly Member for Ealing and Hillingdon, Bassam Mahfouz, is calling on community groups, grassroots organisations and residents across Ealing to explore and apply for funding to transform their local environment, as the Mayor of London launches a new £12.4 million Green Roots Fund.
The fund, announced during London Climate Action Week (21 June – 29 June 2025), is set to boost access to green and blue spaces – such as parks, rivers and community gardens – particularly in areas with limited access to nature. Grants of between £10,000 and £500,000 will be awarded over the next three years to eligible projects.
The Green Roots Fund is part of the mayoral agenda to reduce health inequalities, combat climate change and increase biodiversity through localised, community-driven initiatives. Project ideas could include rewilding, planting trees, creating wildflower meadows or improving rivers and wetlands.
Earlier this year, Mr Mahfouz took part in a special beaver naming ceremony and tour at Paradise Fields in Greenford where beavers were re-introduced back into Ealing after more than 400 years.
Mr Mahfouz said: “Previous City Hall environmental funds have helped reintroduce beavers to Ealing and planted hundreds of trees across Hillingdon.
“Improving our environment has a substantial impact on our physical and mental wellbeing. From tackling flooding, to delivering cleaner air, these grassroots projects make a huge impact.
We’ve got an amazing track record, so I am encouraging local organisations to apply and help create greener spaces for everyone to enjoy.”
