Following an Ealing Council cabinet meeting last week (12 February 2025), plans to increase council tax by 4.99% for 2025/6 will be discussed at next month’s (4 March 2025) full council meeting.
Documents showing the planned rise revealed that general council tax will rise by 2.99% while there is another 2% increase that households will pay for the social care precept.
In its published report, the council said of the increase: “The council acknowledges the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on its residents and endeavours to balance decisions regarding council tax increases with the necessity to fund increasing demands for social care and temporary accommodation. To ensure financial sustainability in the medium to long term, the council’s Strategic Director, Resources recommends a 2.99% increase in core council tax and 2.0% for the social care levy.”
If approved at the full council meeting, Band D homes will be charged £2,041.02 for council tax which includes social care and GLA contribution up from £1,948.34. While for those living in Band H homes, council tax will rise to more than £4,000.
The percentage increase follows similar hikes expected at neighbouring boroughs Brent, Hounslow and Hammersmith & Fulham while in East London, Newham is looking to increase council tax by 8.99%.
Speaking to EALING.NEWS, an Ealing Council spokesperson said: “Ealing Council is looking to set a council tax increase of 4.99%. This is to keep the burden on residents as low as possible. The government allows for a 3% increase for general spending and up to 2% for adult social care.
“By keeping the increase below 5%, we’re ensuring we don’t ask too much from our community whilst still balancing the budget.”
