Ealing Council has urged the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan to rethink his draft London Plan. The plan envisages around 11,000 homes on existing industrial land in Ealing, which the council estimates could put around 7,000 jobs at risk.
The Labour-run council says a higher housing target will not, on its own, deliver more homes. It wants the mayor to show how the homes can be built while protecting industrial land used by local businesses.
Ealing Council says it delivered more new homes than any other London borough in 2024/25 and has averaged 784 affordable homes a year over the past five years. It also says more affordable housing is currently under construction in Ealing than anywhere else in the capital.
Councillor Peter Mason, leader of Ealing Council, said: “This cannot be a choice between homes or jobs. We want to work with the mayor on a London Plan that delivers both and creates stronger communities for the future.”
Councillor Monica Hamidi, the council’s cabinet member for good growth, added: “Our industrial areas are a vital part of our economy. They provide space for businesses to grow, support thousands of jobs, and are part of supply chains across London. Once we lose this land, it is extremely difficult to replace.”
