Howard Dawber, Deputy Mayor of London for Business and Growth, joined businesses and entrepreneurs at the third Ealing Festival of Business on Thursday (15 October 2026), where he spoke about the challenges facing local firms and the opportunities available to help them grow.
The event, held at the University of West London, brought together businesses from across Ealing and west London, with visitors meeting exhibitors, networking and discussing business opportunities.
Organised by West London Chambers of Commerce, the festival was in its third year, with exhibitors ranging from accountants and solicitors to security firms and organisations offering business advice.
Speaking to EALING.NEWS at the event, Mr Dawber acknowledged the financial pressures facing businesses.
He said: “Well, look, we know it’s tough running a business right now. Costs are higher than they should be, business rates are higher than they should be. Rents have been going up because inflation’s been going up.”
Mr Dawber said there were reasons for optimism despite the pressures on businesses. He pointed to London’s creative, technology and health sectors, as well as the potential for local firms to benefit from tourism, major sporting events and new hotels opening across the capital.
Asked what he would say to businesses in Ealing, he said: “Well, first of all, we’re on your side.”
He added: “We want you to be creating jobs in London and we want to help you get the investment, the space, the opportunities you need.”
Mr Dawber encouraged local firms to make use of Grow London Local, which holds monthly meetings in independent cafes in Ealing. Businesses can meet others, find out about potential contracts and get help accessing advice on matters such as legal and accounting services.
Sally Smith, chief operating officer of West London Chambers of Commerce, said the festival showed why meeting people in person still mattered.
Speaking to EALING.NEWS, Ms Smith said: “There’s nothing to beat face-to-face networking.”
The exhibition featured businesses offering services ranging from security and accountancy to legal and financial advice, alongside organisations supporting new and growing businesses.
Visitors could also attend seminars involving Ealing Council, the University of West London and sponsors including iFAST Global Bank and Barratt.
