Gunnersbury Park to mark centenary with exhibition

Gunnersbury Park and Museum, jointly owned by Ealing and Hounslow councils, will launch a new exhibition later this month as part of a year-long programme marking 100 years since the west London park opened to the public.

The exhibition, Gunnersbury Unlocked: From Private Grounds to Public Park, opens on 29 March and explores how the park has been used by people who have lived, worked and spent leisure time there over the past century.

The display will look at key moments in the site’s history, including its transition from a privately owned Rothschild estate to a public park and its role in supporting the war effort during the second world war. It will be free to visit and will run until the end of 2026.

Victoria Barlow, head of museum services, said: “This is a very exciting year for Gunnersbury Park and we are delighted to be part of this celebration of an amazing place. Gunnersbury Unlocked tells some of the stories of the people who created, cared for and used this amazing local resource.”

A series of events are planned throughout the year. Highlights include an anniversary-themed egg hunt from 31 March to 12 April, a large public birthday celebration with live 1920s music and family activities on 25 May, and a family dog show on 21 June.

Nature walks, heritage tours and a Halloween-themed half-term trail are also planned later in the year.
