The Ealing Wind Orchestra performed two premieres of music composed by London College of Music student composers last week (13 December 2024) at Ealing’s University of West London.
The two students, undergraduate Sunghoon Lee and Masters graduate Katrine Aziz took part in a year-long residency with the Ealing Wind Orchestra in which they collaborated with the orchestra, discussed ideas with conductor Dave Gordon-Shute and developed their final pieces.
Katrine Aziz said: “It is a really fulfilling experience to have your work brought to life by talented performers. My piece, ‘Marchers’ Dance’, is a twist on a traditional march, playing with the standard ideas of forward movement that march music creates. I used reversed melodies and rhythms to turn the feeling of forward motion into reversed and circular motion.”
Sunghoon Lee said: “My piece is called ‘Valley of the Moon’ which is inspired by a journey in the desert called ‘Wadi Rum’ in Jordan, also known as ‘Wadi al-Qamar’ (Valley of the Moon). I am excited for its premiere.”
More than 150 people attended the performance which took place in the Weston Hall.
