Ealing Southall MP Deirdre Costigan has been appointed as a government whip following a reshuffle of ministerial roles announced by the Labour government on Tuesday evening (12 May 2026).
Ms Costigan, who first became an MP in 2024, was named as Junior Lord of the Treasury — a role within the government whips’ office responsible for helping manage parliamentary business and party discipline in the House of Commons.
She was among a number of Labour MPs handed new ministerial and whip roles as Sir Keir Starmer changed parts of his government team.
Alongside Ms Costigan’s appointment, Nesil Caliskan was named Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, while Natalie Fleet was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Home Office.
Other appointments included Catherine Atkinson at the Ministry of Justice, Preet Kaur Gill at the Department of Health and Social Care, Gen Kitchen as Comptroller of HM Household, and Shaun Davies as Assistant Whip.
