Why I’m standing: Jon Ball Ealing Liberal Democrats, Ealing Common

On 7 May 2026, residents in the Ealing Common ward will vote to choose who represents them at Ealing Council.

EALING.NEWS has asked all candidates standing to become a councillor, 7 questions about who they are, what they hope to deliver and why they want residents to vote for them.

Here’s what Jon Ball, standing for Ealing Liberal Democrats in Ealing Common, has to say:

Tell us a bit about yourself, your priorities for the ward and why you want to be councillor for Ealing Common?
I’m proud to have been a councillor for Ealing Common ward since 2002 — that’s 24 years now. Ealing Common is a great place to live, but my priority is to make it even better. My day job is working in film and TV.

What motivates you?
Fighting poverty, ignorance, and conformity.

What is your own personal connection to either Ealing Common or any other part of the borough?
I’ve lived in Ealing for over thirty years, the bulk of that time in Ealing Common ward. My son goes to Grange Primary School in the ward, and I support local businesses by frequenting the Red Lion, the Rose and Crown, the Grove, and The Grange. I have stood for Parliament for Ealing Central and Acton constituency three times.

What do you consider to be your 3 top political, work or personal achievements and what impact have they had?
Finding homes for homeless people is the most rewarding casework I deal with. Bringing up my son Oliver so he didn’t become a juvenile delinquent — so far at least! And successfully moving the motion that declared a climate emergency in Ealing.,

What do you consider to be the top 3 challenges Ealing Common faces and how will you as a councillor address them?
Crime and antisocial behaviour — I will continue to work with the local police team, the council’s community safety officers, and my ward colleagues.
Fly-tipping — we put forward a budget amendment to increase street cleansing frequency but Labour voted it down. If we gain control we can sort this situation.
And improving our parks and open spaces — for instance, it takes far too long for playground equipment to be fixed.

What do you love about Ealing Common and the borough of Ealing?
Ealing has an amazing heritage, from the Grade 2 listed town hall which is shamefully lying unused, through historic Ealing Studios which I’ve had the pleasure to work at, to the amazing music heritage including the classic lineup of the Rolling Stones first playing together at the Ealing Club, now the Red Rooms. We have fantastic parks and open spaces — Ealing Common has the Common itself within the ward, and Walpole Park, Lammas Park and Gunnersbury Park just outside. The ward also has some great local communities of neighbours who support each other.

How accessible will you be to Ealing Common residents and how can they get in contact with you now and if elected how will you ensure you are accessible to them in the future?
I’m on Bluesky at @libdemjon and on Twitter at @JonBall. You can also email me at jon.ball@ealing.gov.uk. My number is 020 8810 1078 and my address is on the ballot paper. I also hold monthly advice surgeries with my ward colleague Connie Hersch at the University of West London on St. Mary’s Road.
