A lecturer at Ealing’s University of West London has been recognised for his work promoting fair pay at an awards ceremony celebrating employers across the borough.
Tom Levitt, an associate lecturer and sustainability lead at the university’s Claude Littner Business School, was serving as master of ceremonies at the annual Ealing Living Wage Place awards when he was unexpectedly presented with the Living Wage Champion award.
The event, held at the university’s Freddie’s venue, recognised organisations that pay the voluntary Living Wage, which is set above the legal minimum and adjusted to reflect higher costs in London.
Presenting the award, Councillor Kamaljit Kaur Nagpal, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for decent living incomes, highlighted efforts to improve pay standards across the borough.
Levitt, who helped secure Living Wage accreditation for the university in 2023, said: “Organisations that pay staff the absolute minimum deprive their employees of dignity – and they pay a high price for that. With dignity comes productivity, loyalty and long service.”
More than 16,000 organisations nationwide are now accredited, with Ealing’s campaign aiming to reach 200 participating employers.
