Ealing Council has appointed a housing developer to build more than 300 affordable homes as part of the proposed redevelopment of Gurnell Leisure Centre.
Countryside Properties UK, part of housebuilder Vistry, has been selected as the council’s preferred partner for the residential phase of the scheme. The wider project also includes replacing the existing leisure centre, which was built in the late 1970s.
The site covers around 13 hectares of land off Ruislip Road East and Argyle Road. Planning permission has already been granted for a new leisure facility and surrounding parkland, while the housing element currently has outline approval. An application setting out the detailed design of the homes is expected to be submitted later this year.
The redevelopment forms part of wider proposals to create a regional park linking green spaces across west London and into Hounslow, with the Gurnell site expected to sit at the centre of those plans.
According to the council, the homes are intended to be affordable, although the exact tenure mix has not been confirmed.
Nick Churcher, managing director of Vistry West London, said the scheme would involve building “high-quality affordable housing at scale” in partnership with the council.
Peter Mason, leader of Ealing Council, said appointing a development partner marked a step towards providing “hundreds of high-quality, affordable homes” alongside a new leisure centre for residents.
