Students at Ealing’s University of West London heard from industry professionals about careers in gaming, animation and interactive media at a special event earlier this month.
The games careers event took place on 2 February 2026 at the university’s Digital Futures Lab. Organised by Sally Sheppard, lecturer in game design and animation at UWL’s London School of Film, Media and Design, it featured short talks from four speakers followed by a question and answer session.
Conway Sutton, a freelance games writer and narrative designer, spoke about securing a first role after university and the importance of professional communities.
Aliaksandr Zhorau, a senior software engineer at Meta specialising in large-scale multiplayer games, discussed collaboration across departments.
Director and producer HaZ Dulull outlined his route from an early interest in games to work spanning film, television and interactive media, while recruitment specialist Darren Butler offered advice on developing transferable skills.
Students were also able to showcase their own games and seek portfolio feedback.
Ms Sheppard said: “Academia and industry should feed into one another.”
Level 6 student Rory Lamb said: “I had a great time, made industry contacts and felt inspired.”
