Ealing Trailfinders veteran Rayn Smid has announced his retirement from professional rugby after suffering an injury that brings to an end a distinguished nine-year spell with the west London club.
The 33-year-old South African-born back rower, who joined Ealing in 2016, made 173 appearances -= more than any other player in the club’s professional era — and will now continue his rehabilitation with the team.
Smid’s time at Trailfinders coincided with the club’s rise to prominence in English rugby. He lifted his first silverware in the 2017–18 season, starting in the side that beat Leinster to claim the British & Irish Cup. A year later, as captain, he guided Ealing to Championship Cup glory over London Irish, before leading them to their first-ever Championship title in 2021–22, scoring 15 tries in the campaign.
In subsequent seasons, Smid played a central role in two further Championship triumphs (2023–24 and 2024–25) and back-to-back Premiership Cup semi-final appearances, cementing his reputation as one of the club’s most influential players both on and off the field.
Reflecting on his career, Smid described his time at Ealing as “incredibly special”, adding that the club had “played a huge role in both my life and my family’s life”.
Ealing’s director of rugby, Ben Ward, hailed Smid’s legacy, saying: “His impact on and off the field will stand the test of time. The qualities he offered as captain have shaped the club into what it is today.”
