Ealing Council cracks down on abandoned vehicles

A crackdown on abandoned vehicles by Ealing Council has led to 23 cars being removed from housing estates in Hanwell and Southall.

The removals came from two major operations in recent months: eight from the Copley estate in Hanwell in May 2025, and 15 from the Havelock estate in Southall in July 2025, with more action set to follow.

An Ealing Council spokesperson told EALING.NEWS: “Enforcement officers are continuing to work their way around the housing estates across the borough.”

Before a vehicle is towed, the council fixes a notice to windscreens and letters are sent to registered keepers. If no action is taken, the council then steps up action and gets the vehicle removed. Once at the pound, owners can collect their cars but must pay towing and storage costs. Unclaimed vehicles are stripped for parts and recycled.

The rules for parking on estates mirror those on public roads: vehicles must be taxed, insured, roadworthy and hold a valid MOT. Statutory off-road notice (SORN) vehicles are not permitted, nor are commercial garages operating within estates.

The council said that while abandoned cars have long been removed as part of routine enforcement, this marks a new, targeted effort to clear specific housing estates.

Residents are being urged to find alternatives for unwanted vehicles, such as donating them to charity or using licensed towing firms.

Councillor Paul Driscoll, the council’s cabinet member for climate action, said: “This isn’t about catching people out. It’s about making our estates safer, cleaner, and more accessible for everyone.

“Our borough has one of the highest numbers of abandoned vehicle reports in London. This operation is a clear signal: we are listening, and we are acting.”
