Ealing Council is leading a cross-borough push to boost access to electric vehicle (EV) charging points after securing £7.5m in government funding.
The council has joined forces with Brent, Hammersmith & Fulham, Haringey, Harrow and Hillingdon to draw on the government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund. Ealing is now seeking a supplier to install and manage the new charge points across the six boroughs.
With 1,081 charging points already installed, Ealing ranks among the most EV-ready parts of the capital. But demand is growing fast, and the council has set out plans to more than double that number to around 2,500 by 2030. Most new chargers will be standard speed units – suitable for overnight use – and installed on existing lampposts, which the council says will cut down on street clutter while making charging more convenient.
Councillor Peter Mason, leader of Ealing Council, said: “Supporting the take up of electric vehicles is a vital part of our work to cut emissions, improve air quality and make the borough a healthier, more sustainable place to live. By expanding our EV charging network and working collaboratively with neighbouring boroughs, we’re making green travel a more realistic option for residents.”
Neighbouring councils have echoed that message. Hillingdon’s cabinet member for planning, housing and growth, Steve Tuckwell, said: “Expanding our EV charging network will make it easier for residents to switch to electric vehicles. Improving air quality and creating a more accessible charging infrastructure reflects our commitment to ‘Putting Residents First’.”
Hammersmith & Fulham’s cabinet member for public realm, Florian Chevoppe-Verdier, added: “This new partnership funding will help us expand our network even further, based on what residents have told us they need for their next car.”
