Four Liberal Democrat councillors from Ealing Council stepped into the kitchen last Friday (27 June 2025), to support the borough’s most vulnerable residents. Liberal Democrats Councillors Jon Ball, Jonathan Oxley, Gary Malcolm and Athena Zissimos volunteered at Ealing Soup Kitchen, assisting with food preparation, cooking, serving and cleaning.
The councillors met with people using the service, as well as the volunteers who help deliver it.
Founded in 1973, Ealing Soup Kitchen operates from St John’s Church in West Ealing from Friday to Sunday providing hot food as well as clothing, showers, haircuts and foot care to those in need. The charity also runs Friday hub sessions with conversation classes, breathing exercises and pastoral care.
Ealing Soup Kitchen is the chosen charity for the 2025/26 Mayor of Ealing, Councillor Anthony Kelly, who selected it during his mayoral year in recognition of its important work in the borough.
Leader of Ealing LibDems, Councillor Gary Malcolm, said: “Liberal Democrats wanted to see more about the good work they do to help those who need a hot meal by volunteering for a day. Ealing Soup Kitchen offer many services to not just feed the clients but offer company, chat and other services to help them feel better.”
Councillor Malcolm added: “Many of those the Soup Kitchen have helped have gone on to have much better lives. The Liberal Democrats applaud the volunteers who work there week in, week out.”
