Bed pressure sores cost Ealing Hospital trust over £500,000

The hospital trust which runs Ealing Hospital, Central Middlesex Hospital and Northwick Park Hospital has paid out £537,489 in settling patient claims for bed pressure sores over the last two years.

The findings for London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust (LNWH) were revealed in a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to NHS England by Opera Beds.

Between 2022-2024, LNWH saw eight litigation claims being made. Of the £537,489 being paid out £164,776 was damages to the claimants, £48,213 was NHS legal costs and £324,500 claimant legal costs.

Speaking to EALING.NEWS, a spokesperson for London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust said: “We apologise to anyone affected by pressure ulcers acquired in hospital, ensuring action is taken to enable learning.”

The spokesperson added: “Our more recent data shows we are achieving significantly reduced pressure ulcer rates following a number of improvements made.”
