Franchise plans for Northolt and Southall Post Offices

Two Post Offices, one on Mandeville Road in Northolt and one on King Street in Southall are among a number of branches which are being looked at to be franchised.

Last week, a list of more than 100 branches of the Post Office was revealed which showed details of branches selected for cost saving purposes to be either run by a third party on behalf of the Post Office or potentially shut down.

In a statement to EALING.NEWS, a Post Office spokesperson said: “We are considering a range of options to reduce our central costs. This includes considering the future of our remaining Directly Managed Branches (DMBs), which are loss-making.”

They added: “We have had long held a publicly-stated ambition to move to a fully franchised network and we are in dialogue with the unions about future options for the DMBs.”

According to the Post Office, it is looking for branches to be run by one of its retail partners or an independent postmaster.

The move by the Post Office follows the closing earlier this year of The Broadway branch in Southall while Acton’s King Street branch shut in 2018.  The Post Office claims that there are no plans for either the Northolt or Southall King Street  branch to be closed as it seeks to franchise the location.

Ealing Liberal Democrat Councillor Connie Hersch spokesperson for crime, communities and town centres said: “Liberal Democrats say it is very disappointing to see that the Post Office HQ is looking to close Northolt and Southall. People have suffered in Acton when the Crown Post Office closed a number of years ago and in Southall where the Post Office closed earlier this year.”

Councillor Hersch added: “These are key and essential services for many parts of the borough and we support efforts to keep them open for all members of the community from small business owners to vulnerable individuals and pensioners.”
