Candidates from across the political spectrum set out their positions on cycling and active travel at a local election hustings in Ealing last week.
The event, organised by Ealing Cycling Campaign and chaired by Elly Castellano, took place on 8 April 2026 at The Questors Theatre ahead of the borough’s council elections on 7 May 2026, with Labour currently in control of Ealing Council. Representatives from all major parties standing in Ealing attended, with the exception of Reform UK.
The evening hustings saw five candidates attend – standing councillors Anthony Young (Conservative), Connie Hersch (Liberal Democrat) and Paul Driscoll (Labour), and two others seeking election to Ealing Council – Neil Reynolds (Green Party) and Craig Smith (Ealing Community Independents).
Speaking order was decided by drawing names from a cycle helmet, with each candidate outlining their approach to improving cycling infrastructure. All expressed support for the borough’s cycling strategy, though Anthony Young raised concerns about safety, including bus stop bypasses, and the need to maintain access for shop servicing along the A4020.
Other candidates emphasised accessibility and accountability. Mr Reynolds said cycle routes should be safe enough for children to use independently, while Councillor Hersch highlighted the Liberal Democrats’ role in scrutinising delivery. Mr Smith pointed to school streets and community-led initiatives, and Councillor Driscoll cited progress already made by Ealing Council.
Questions from the audience followed, with organisers describing the event as demonstrating broad cross-party backing for safer cycling routes.
