Southall medical centre to receive £2m upgrade

Jubilee Gardens Medical Centre in Southall is set for a major upgrade after the chancellor announced up to £2 million of investment as part of a national programme to expand community-based healthcare.

The funding, confirmed ahead of Wednesday’s (26 November 2025) autumn budget, forms part of the government’s plan to establish 250 Neighbourhood Health Centres across England. Ministers say the programme will improve access to GPs and other local services by bringing more care closer to where people live, easing pressure on hospitals and helping cut NHS waiting lists. Final plans for the Southall upgrade are expected to be agreed before work begins from April 2026.

The centres, described by ministers as local “one-stop shops”, are intended to house a mix of GPs, nurses, dentists and pharmacists. Officials say the early focus will be on areas with high levels of deprivation and on supporting people with long-term conditions such as diabetes and heart failure.

Deirdre Costigan, Labour MP for Ealing Southall, welcomed the investment, saying her constituents had “waited far too long” for easily accessible care and that the upgrade would mean “faster treatment” and “care that works around patients’ lives”.

Karin Smyth, the health minister, said the new centres represented a shift in how the NHS is organised. Smyth said: “Neighbourhood Health Centres fundamentally reimagine how the NHS works by bringing care closer to home and ensuring services are organised around patients’ needs.”

Rachel Reeves, the chancellor, said the Budget would outline further measures to reduce waiting times and boost NHS productivity, including £300m for new technology aimed at reducing administrative workloads. The government says improvements in productivity could release billions for reinvestment in frontline services.

Further details about the Jubilee Gardens upgrade, including design plans and a construction timetable, are expected in the new year.
