Police have issued a warning about a about a vehicle scam happening in Northolt, Greenford and Ruislip, in which motorists are targeted while driving and pressured into handing over cash at the roadside following false claims of vehicle damage.
Officers said the scam involves a man in vehicle flashing his headlights repeatedly to persuade another driver to stop. Once the motorist pulls over, the scammer claims the other driver has damaged his his wing mirror before intimidating and demanding cash on the spot.
In a posting on MetEngage, North Greenford PCSO Galjit Mahey said: “A male driver flashes his headlights repeatedly to get other motorists to stop. Once the victim pulls over, he falsely claims that they have damaged his wing mirror, then intimidates them and demands cash on the spot.
“This is a fraudulent and intimidating tactic. Do not give money under these circumstances.”
Police are advising drivers never to stop their vehicle if flashed repeatedly without a clear reason. Anyone who feels unsafe or suspects a scam should remain in their vehicle, keep doors locked and drive to a safe, well-lit location.
Officers said cash should never be handed over at the roadside and that genuine collisions should be dealt with by exchanging details and reporting the incident directly with police and insurance companies.
