Pothole repairs surge in Ealing after winter weather

Pothole repairs across Ealing more than doubled in the first two months of the year, according to council figures released under a Freedom of Information (FOI) request, pointing to growing pressure on the borough’s roads after a wet winter.

Ealing Council recorded 1,470 potholes repaired in January and February 2026, up from 716 during the same period in 2025 — an increase of about 105%.

In its FOI response to a question on how many potholes were reported in January 2026 and February 2026 and compared to the same months in 2024 and 2025, Ealing Council said: “We receive reports from various Apps, telephone calls, emails, via councillors and the council website. We do not keep a listed record of all of these reports, only those that require repair.”

Separate data compiled by Protyre Autocare suggests a wider rise across the capital, with at least 11,092 pothole and carriageway reports made to London councils in January and February 2026, compared with 4,706 a year earlier, although only 17 of 33 boroughs responded to the request.

Among neighbouring boroughs, London Borough of Brent reported 1,180 carriageway defect reports from the public over the same period, up from 552 the previous year.

Archie Murray, regional technical trainer and tyre safety specialist at Protyre Autocare, said: “Our main concern when motorists hit potholes is for their safety, and the safety of other road users. If you hit a pothole, pull up somewhere safe and check your tyre for any damage or loss of pressure.

“Look for splits or bulges in the tyre, or any signs of damage to the wheel itself. Even a slight drop in pressure can increase fuel consumption if left unchecked.”
