Children at a Japanese nursery in Acton were joined by the Mayor of Ealing earlier this month (5 February 2026) for a sushi-making lesson highlighting the borough’s cultural diversity.
Councillor Anthony Kelly, the Mayor of Ealing, visited Miyabi Nursery with his wife, the Mayoress Mrs Maria Kelly, and Councillor Seema Kumar. Children welcomed the party with a song before demonstrating how to prepare traditional Japanese maki sushi. The mayor and his guests then sat with the children to roll rice and seaweed and sample the finished pieces.
The nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage framework while incorporating elements of Japanese educational philosophy.
Councillor Kelly said: “I’m really delighted to be here today at Miyabi Nursery. I’ve had a wonderful time making sushi with the children and learning about what they do here each day. It’s a really lovely place.”
During the visit he spoke to children about his civic role, signed certificates to mark the occasion and met staff and the nursery’s founder to discuss its bilingual curriculum.
