New training workshop tackles e-waste and unemployment in Ealing

A new training workshop taking place next month (9 October 2025) at the Greenford Road Reuse and Recycling Centre will offer unemployed people in Ealing the chance to gain electrical repair skills while helping tackle the growing mountain of discarded appliances.

Run by Action West London (AWL), the “Electrical Fixing” workshop is designed to provide participants with practical training and a recognised qualification. The scheme will also reduce electronic waste by encouraging residents to donate broken but fixable items.

Repaired kettles, toasters and lamps will be redistributed to local charities, in what organisers describe as a “win-win” for the community.

Donation points have been set up at ReActon, Act One Cinema and Acton Market.

Gary Buckley, AWL’s chief executive, said: “This program is about more than just fixing broken appliances; it’s about fixing lives and our environment. By providing practical skills and a recognised certification, we’re not only helping people find pathways to employment but also promoting a sustainable, circular economy in West London. We’re asking the community to help us by donating their broken items, turning what would be waste into a valuable resource for training and charity.”

The half-day, in-person workshops will be led by expert fixers from organisations including the Fixing Factory. Participants will learn troubleshooting, repair and safety testing, earning a Level 1 certificate in repair and portable appliance testing. Each session will accommodate about 12 people, prioritising those who are unemployed or not in education or training.
