Residents from across Ealing have urged the borough’s three MPs to oppose the proposed Rosebank oil field ahead of an expected government decision on the controversial North Sea development.
Campaign group Parents for Future West London has written to Ealing Southall MP Deirdre Costigan, Ealing North MP James Murray and Ealing Central and Acton MP Dr Rupa Huq, calling on them to back renewable energy instead of new oil and gas projects.
The campaign comes as ministers prepare to reconsider the Rosebank oil field, west of Shetland, after a court ruled its environmental impact had not been fully assessed.
Residents from Acton, Ealing, Hanwell, Perivale and Southall signed the letter, saying recent extreme heat and continued pressure on household energy bills underline the need to speed up the transition to renewable energy.
Acton resident Olivia Francesca said: “We need the government to back renewable energy with the same urgency it talks about energy independence.”
Perivale resident Richard Wong said the campaign was about protecting communities from future energy price shocks while tackling climate change.
