Artificial intelligence and 3D printing were among the technologies discussed at a talk on the future of historic building conservation in Ealing.
Dr Efcharis Balodimou, senior lecturer in the Built Environment at the University of West London, spoke to members of Ealing Civic Society at Open Ealing in Dickens Yard on 12 May. Her research includes the use of digital technology to monitor and conserve historic buildings.
She explained to the audience how tools including laser scanning, thermal imaging and digital surveying are helping specialists examine historic buildings, identify problems and plan restoration work without damaging the original structure.
Dr Balodimou highlighted the restoration of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris following the devastating fire in 2019, with modern techniques used alongside traditional craftsmanship during five years of renovation before the cathedral reopened in 2024.
Dr Balodimou said: “While digital technologies and artificial intelligence are transforming the way we preserve historic buildings, they complement rather than replace the expertise of architects and conservation professionals.”
