Ealing’s University of West London hosted a free Future Pilot Skills event earlier this month (17 January 2026) aimed at supporting aspiring and trainee commercial pilots at the start of their careers.
The event, held in partnership with FlightPad, brought together industry experts, flight training organisations and speakers to outline the skills, mindset and pathways needed to succeed in aviation. Organisations taking part included British Airways, Loganair, EmPower Flight and The Air League.
Attendees took part in aptitude assessments, technical workshops and practical sessions designed to reflect the day-to-day responsibilities of a professional pilot. They also had opportunities to network with airline pilots, recruiters and representatives from UK and EU flight schools.
Presentations included guidance on the British Airways Speedbird Pilot Academy, personal reflections on resilience in the industry and a confidence awareness workshop led by The Honourable Company of Air Pilots. Participants were also able to use the university’s Boeing 737 simulator and enter competitions offering simulator time, flying lessons and equipment.
Senior lecturer Kanchana Gamage said: “This event was about breaking down barriers and inspiring future pilots.”
Yatin Iyer, an A-level student, said: “Hearing real-world perspectives was genuinely inspiring.”
GCSE student Luqman Salim said: “The presentations were incredibly inspiring and gave me amazing advice about aviation careers.”
