Acton Town station has been named joint winner of an environmental award in Transport for London’s annual In Bloom gardening competition.
The station, which serves the District and Piccadilly lines and is one of the borough’s major Underground interchanges, shared first place in the Environment category with Ruislip depot. Both were recognised for finding imaginative ways to reuse old objects in their gardens.
Around 60 stations, offices and depots across London’s transport network took part in this year’s competition, including entries from the London Underground, London Overground, Elizabeth line and bus network.
The competition dates back to 1910, when it was established on the District Railway, and encourages TfL staff to create and maintain gardens and other green spaces across the transport network.
This year’s competition also included categories for community gardens, fruit and vegetable growing, indoor gardens and cultivated station gardens.
Mete Coban, Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy, said: “TfL’s ‘In Bloom’ competition is a fantastic example of how we can bring nature to even the smallest spaces.
“From flower gardens to fruit and veg, it’s brilliant to see TfL staff turning stations and transport offices into little pockets of greenery for everyone to enjoy.”
Ann Gavaghan, customer experience manager at TfL, said: “The competition is a great way to celebrate those who create green spaces at their stations, depots, and offices, while also recognising the environmental and mental health impact these spaces have.
“We’ve had an excellent variety of entries this year and I would like to thank everyone who takes the time to plant and sustain gardens.”
