Acton reuse day offers free school uniforms, bike repairs & crafts

Families in Ealing are being invited to refresh their children’s school wardrobes for free ahead of the new school year at a community “reuse and repair” day taking place this weekend in Acton.

The ReActon Hub on Stirling Road will host the event this Saturday (16 August 2025), from 11am to 3pm, with a school uniform swap shop. Parents can bring outgrown or unwanted items to exchange or donate, helping others avoid the annual scramble – and expense – of buying new.

Organised by Ealing Council in partnership with the West London Waste Authority, the day forms part of a push to promote sustainable living and reduce textile waste.

Councillor Paul Driscoll, the council’s cabinet member for climate action, said: “Buying new school uniform each year creates financial pressure for families, and I’m so pleased this event can help make it easier, while also helping our planet.”

Councillor Driscoll added: “Whether you’re looking to declutter, pick up essentials, or simply enjoy a day of community spirit and creativity, ReActon’s Reuse and Repair event is the place to be.”

Alongside the uniform swap, visitors can join a repair cafe for textiles, take part in children’s crafts, compete on adapted bikes, get free cycle safety checks and browse pre-loved bikes for sale. A “give and take” stall for toys will also run. All activities are free and do not require booking.

Residents can also drop off school uniform in advance at:

  • ActOne Cinema and Cafe, 119–121 High Street, London, W3 6NA
  • Acton Town Hall Library, Everyone Active Acton Centre, High Street, Acton, W3 6NE
  • Northfields Community Library, Northfield Avenue, Ealing, W5 4UA
  • Perivale Community Hive & Library, Horsenden Lane South, Perivale, UB6 7NT
  • Southall Library and Dominion Centre, 112 The Green, Southall, UB2 4BQ
  • West Ealing Library, Melbourne Avenue, London, W13 9BT

Both branded and generic schoolwear – from shirts and jumpers to PE kit, footwear and school bags – are accepted, provided they are clean and in good condition. Further pop-up uniform swaps will take place across the borough until mid-September.
