Ealing Hospital celebrates its unsung heroes in photo exhibition

A photographic exhibition at Ealing Hospital is shining a light on the often-overlooked staff and volunteers who keep the hospital running.

Organised by London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust (LNWH), which runs the hospital, the display celebrates the vital work of non-clinical colleagues who operate behind the scenes.

The exhibition, open now on Level Three via the stairs opposite WHSmith in the main entrance, provides a unique look at the people who quietly keep the hospital going, often without recognition or reward.

Among them is Beryl Carr, a 103-year-old volunteer who began helping out at the Friends Cafe aged 83. Since turning 100, Beryl has collected a CBE for her unpaid but important work.

Alongside her are portraits of bio-mechanical engineer Tamir Rajani and his team, who are responsible for maintaining and repairing the 4,000 medical devices used throughout the hospital — from ventilators to ECG machines.

Mr Tajani said: “Some of the equipment we maintain like the ventilators is complex. But you’d be surprised how many times we get called out only to find something hasn’t put the plug in or switched something on.”

Also featured are Dusty and Freddy, a pair of peregrine falcons who have made the hospital home and are now one of London’s most successful breeding pairs. Their presence is monitored and supported by Ealing Wildlife Group.
