Southall’s Grand Union Canal gets Earth Day clean-up

To mark Earth Day on Tuesday (22 April 2025), staff from the West London NHS Trust, Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust and Ealing Council came together for a litter pick along the Grand Union Canal in Southall.

The event reflected this year’s Earth Day theme, “our power, our planet” – a call to action highlighting the role individuals and institutions play in safeguarding their local environments.

The initiative also supported the Trust’s broader ambition of becoming a greener NHS organisation, as outlined in its Green Plan. The litter pick was made possible with support from Ealing Council’s climate action and sustainability team, who provided equipment for the volunteers.

Among the volunteers was Paul Stefanoski, Trust chief financial officer and senior responsible officer for sustainability. He said: “I’m delighted to be part of the Earth day litter pick and it’s great to see so many people out here today doing their bit for the local area. By making small changes to protect our environment, we not only support our sustainability goals, but help the local communities we serve to achieve better health outcomes.”

Ealing Council’s head of sustainability & climate, Mark Thomlinson, added: “Today’s Earth day litter picking event is about making the borough a better place to live in, work and enjoy.”
