A 70-year-old grandmother who lives at the Toplocks Estate in Southall has been recognised for her volunteering at the Havelock Community Centre as part of International Volunteer Day (5 December 2024).
Lyn Hutchison has been volunteering at the Centre in Southall which is owned by housing association giant A2Dominion for a decade. Each year around 5,000 use the Centre where she helps to welcome visitors and helps to coordinate events.
In 2022, Ms Hutchison worked with A2Dominion to set up food distribution in partnership with The Felix Project at the community centre to help those struggling with the cost of living
She said: “I feel passionately about providing opportunities for people to access food as me and my family have benefitted from food banks in the past. This service is crucial for people who could be experiencing difficulties in their personal circumstances.”
Ms Hutchison added: “I love volunteering, it is an opportunity to give something back and help the community. I would encourage others to consider giving their time, it is a great opportunity to build on skills and make a difference.”
Dawn Wightman, director of homes and communities at A2Dominion, said: “Lyn is an inspiration, and I would like to thank her for her ongoing support and the volunteering she has done for the last 10 years. We know how valued Lyn is by the community and the support she has provided to help us run Havelock Community Centre is very much appreciated.”
