A new Scout troop has opened in Hanwell following increased demand from young people keen to take part in outdoor activities.
The 8th Hanwell (Saxon) Scout Group, based at St Christopher’s Church Hall in Borders Road, has expanded its weekly programme to include Scouts aged 10 to 14, alongside existing Beaver and Cub sections for children aged six to 10. The group offers activities including cooking, camping, rock climbing and archery, with young members working towards a range of badges.
Dwayne Fields, the adventurer, television presenter and chief scout, welcomed the expansion. He said: “I’m incredibly pleased that the 8th Hanwell (Saxon) Scouts have opened. This means there will be more young people in the local community making friends, building their confidence, and gaining skills that will prepare them for life and work.”
Mr Fields, who has undertaken expeditions to Antarctica and the North Pole, said volunteering had played a formative role in his own life and encouraged more adults to get involved.
According to Scouts UK, the movement offers more than 200 activities nationwide and has cited a recent poll which revealed that 94% of Scouts said they had developed useful skills and 85% said they felt happier since joining.
