Supermarket giant Tesco has opened an Express format store in Hanwell at the Hanwell Square housing development on Boston Road.
According to Tesco, the new store which opened on 1 February 2024, has created more than a dozen new jobs as well as offering food bank donations and grant funding for local good causes.
The new Tesco comes a year after Sainsbury’s opened a new branch in Hanwell after being away from the area since the 1950s.
Tesco store manager Thanaraj Rajaratnam said “I am really pleased we have recruited 16 new colleagues locally and I know they will be providing a fantastic service for the community.”
Local community groups and schools can apply for community funding through Tesco’s Stronger Starts which is run in partnership with food redistribution charity FareShare. Three local projects voted for by customers in store every three months get funding from £1,500 to first place, £1,000 to second place and £500 to third place.
He added: “In this store, customers will be able to participate in Tesco’s Stronger Starts scheme, by using the blue tokens we are handing out to vote for a school or local community group to receive some extra financial help. This scheme is designed to help provide healthy food and activities that boost young people’s mental and physical wellbeing and we encourage all of our customers to nominate a school or group for this grant programme.”
This scheme is run in partnership with food redistribution charity FareShare. Each month more than one million meals’ worth of food are donated across the country.
